Career Paths at GAO - Information Technology Specialists

Information Technology Specialists participate in evaluations of the federal government's $40 billion annual investment in modernizing information systems, focusing on agencies' acquisition, management, and operations of information systems supporting federal programs. Reviews also include systems architecture, hardware/software capacity and adequacy, network management, business process reengineering practices, telecommunications issues, and computer security. Information technology specialists must have an undergraduate or graduate degree that includes 30 semester hours, or equivalent, of coursework in a combination of computer science, information management, and/or management information systems/science, mathematics, or statistics; other requirements also apply. Entry information technology specialists are assigned to GAO's Professional Development Program in the Information Technology Team.
